Kilimanjaro Climbing Expeditions
6 Days Kilimanjaro Machame Route
This is probably the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. All your equipment and supplies are porter and a cook prepares all your meals. Where accommodation on the Marangu route is in huts, the Machame route offers strictly tents only. This makes Machame(also referred to as the ``Whiskey route``)better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker.
6 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route
This is the most popular and easiest way to the summit. The trail has huts along its route with all the basic necessities. No technical skills are required for this five day trek. The trek can also be taken in 6 days/5 nights to add acclimatisation with an extra day at Horombo Hut.
7 Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route
Rongai is the only route which approaches Kili from the north and offers a remote journey through unspoilt rainforest and wilderness, far from crowds of the more popular southern routes. It is the only route where it's possible to see wildlife in the first few days of trekking. The ascent to Uhuru follows the Marangu route via Kibo Hut with the descent, also using the Marangu route, offering a different perspective. Whilst not having as much varied scenery as Machame or the western routes, Rongai is one of the easier climbs and is ideal for those looking for a remote hiking experience.
7 Days Kilimanjaro Shira Route
This route starts an altitude of 11600ft (3500m) and should only be attempted by trekkers who are already acclimatised or know from previous experience that they can tolerate altitude. From the trailhead the trail heads east across the centre of the Shira Plateau, where it is often likely to spot big game, such as elephant and buffalo. The route then joins up with the Machame Route at Shira Camp and approaches the summit via Stella Point descending via Mweka Camp.
8 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route
Umbwe Route, which is based in the south, is a classic 8-day tour and is by far the most difficult one offered on Kilimanjaro. The first two days are extremely steep, muddy and generally strenuous making it only suitable for well-trained mountaineers. An acclimatization day is rarely offered on the standard programme, but can be added whereby giving the climber an extra day in the Karanga Valley. The descent trail is the same as the Mweka Route.
